Mighty Avengers #21 - Corrected Copy? What Did We Miss? - UPDATED!
Feb 4, 2009 Comics
As I was taking a look at the new releases set for today on the Diamond Comics site, I noticed that a Mighty Avengers #21 - Corrected Copy is listed. What is this? After doing a quick Google search for “Mighty Avengers 21 corrected“, I was unable to come up with any solid results besides other people asking the same question. The only bit of info I was able to find was a report stating that there was a “printing error” with the comic.
Evidently, Marvel has decided that a large enough problem existed with the original print run of Mighty Avengers #21 to warrant a ”corrected edition”. But, what the heck was the problem???
Continue on to see if we can figure this out together…
The phrasing used (corrected copy) makes me wonder if there was an error within a portion of the text contained in the issue. I read Mighty Avengers #21 (and reviewed it as part of the Weekly Pile series) upon its release 2 weeks ago and didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary when I was finished. Typically when there is an error with a comic, it does not get released and if it does, a statement is made by the publisher usually explaining the problem and offering a date when a revised issue will be available for re-order. The strange thing is, there appears to have been little to no mention of this error until the Diamond solicit was listed on their site and nothing much has been made of it.
When a printing error was announced on All-Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder #10 (phew), the internet lit up with stories about fans attempting to track down a copy of the recalled book and inflated prices appearing on eBay. Of course, that printing error was identified immediately and the comics were actually recalled right away as DC viewed them as offensive. The error itself had a “naughty factor” as curse words were able to be seen under incorrectly used black bars in the text and this excited collectors. The difference in the case of Mighty Avengers #21 is that the printing error does not seem to be easily determined. As mentioned, the book has been out for 2 weeks and a new edition is quietly being released today.
I don’t believe there to be any controversy behind this “corrected edition”. Some may say that Marvel is trying to build buzz for this issue as it moves in a different direction with new writer Dan Slott after the departure of Brian Michael Bendis. But if that were the case, you would think there would be much more “noise” surrounding the release of the ”corrected edition” to drive up interest in the original release. It’s more likely that there was a simple printing error (that readers didn’t really notice) and it is being resolved by the new release today. But, I’m still VERY curious and will have to ask my Local Comic Shop what the problem was as I don’t plan on buying the new edition since I saw no problems while reading the comic I already purchased.
So, my question is this; does anyone know specifically what the ”printing error” was? If so, please shed some light on the subject via the comments section below. In the meantime, its time for some detective work on my end… To the Comic Shop!
***UPDATED***
I just arrived home after my trip to my Local Comic Shop and I have some answers in regards to the “corrected copy” of Mighty Avengers #21. I discovered that many retailers apparently reported damaged copies of the comic as they arrived extremely torn to their shops. As there were no issues with the pile of comics that were delivered to my Local Comic Shop 2 weeks ago, they now have a new stack of Mighty Avengers #21 to try to sell. This will be a tough task as none of the initial copies they ordered were damaged and none of their customers have complained about the comic they purchased.
Has anyone heard anything different from their comic shops? Please comment below if you have anything to add.

Not from what I have heard. I have a meeting this afternoon and then I am hoping to get to my Local Comic Shop before it closes to find out. I will update my post as soon as I know anything.
