The Weekly Pile March 11, 2009: Lightning Strikes Twice…
Mar 14, 2009 Comics, The Weekly Pile
Unbelievably, my Weekly Pile contained the exact same number of new releases this week as it did on Wednesday February 11 of this year… ZERO. Not a single new issue. As detailed in that entry, this was the first time “New Comic Book Day” had not delivered the goods since I began reading weekly books. Well, four weeks have passed since then and it has happened again. This seems to suggest that this is not a fluke, but something that may occur again. What can I do to prevent this from happening again…

A Great Read #8: Previews Review Edition - Previews Issue 246 - PART 1
Mar 2, 2009 A Great Read, Comics
The new issue of Previews was released this past Wednesday so that means it is time to dive in to see what looks exciting!
I encourage you to get a copy of the new Previews catalog if you don’t already have one so you can follow along with this entry. It’s certainly not required, but it will help out a bit. The catalog is pretty thick, so this entry will be done in 2 parts to ensure that as many items can be covered as possible.

Trivia Time #5: Image Comics - The Early Years
Feb 14, 2009 Comics, Trivia Time
My mind has been thinking back to those early Image days during the 90’s ever since the announcement of a Youngblood movie earlier this week. So I decided to create a Trivia Time based on the exploits of superstar creators Jim Lee, Marc Silvestri, Todd McFarlane, Rob Liefeld, Erik Larsen, Whilce Portacio and Jim Valentino when they decided to leave Marvel and strike out on their own to create a comic company. That company turned out to be Image Comics; a publisher still pumping out solid books today.
There will be 10 questions in total. I will post the answers to these questions on the Trivia Answers page. No peeking until AFTER you have taken the quiz!
Continue on to take the quiz and be sure to keep score and find out how you did when you finish. Each question is worth one point unless otherwise noted.

Youngblood Movie Announced!!! Rob Liefeld and Brett Ratner Eye 2010 Release
Read the rest of this entry »
A new Shaft will potentially be hitting the big screen in 2010. Newsarama.com broke the news that Rob Liefeld’s creator owned Youngblood comic book series has been optioned by Brett Ratner to be made into a major motion picture. This announcement has definitely polarized some comic fans as the typical Liefeld bashing has already begun in the comments section under the recently posted article at Newsarama. Thankfully, there are Liefeld fans lending their support to help even out the discussion. Liefeld himself has actually replied to a few users comments with solid responses that don’t resort to name calling or flat out speculation. In fact, he has answered both his fans and critics with the same enthusiasm he applies to his work. Liefeld’s enthusiastic art is “fun” and I hope this movie will follow suit.

Vertigo Comics $1 First Issue Initiative - Why Not Pick Them Up?
Feb 7, 2009 Comics
The New York Comic Con has been going on since Friday and as usual, there are LOTS of announcements being made for the months and year(s) ahead. Vertigo held its panel on Friday afternoon and broke a particular piece of news that I think everyone should be aware of. Yesterday I wrote that the 2nd half of Comic Book Buyer’s Guide #5: Every Comic Shop is Different would be posted today, but that will be posted in the near future as I wanted to touch upon Vertigo’s clever new initiative as soon as I heard about it.
With the steady increase in comic book prices, Vertigo seems to understand that a new series, especially one that doesn’t star a well known character or may not boast an “all-star” creative team, needs all the help it can get to find its way into someone’s weekly pile. With the implementation of Vertigo’s $1 Initiative, the mature-readers imprint is set to get more of their quality comics into readers hands than ever before by offering all #1 issues in 2009 at a cover price of $1. Comics for one dollar?!? I’m in! …and you should be too.

Comic Book Buyer’s Guide #5 - Every Comic Shop is Different - Part 1
Feb 6, 2009 Comic Book Buyer's Guide, Comics
Do you remember the first time you walked into your Local Comic Shop? The VERY first time. How everything seemed brand new and fresh? Maybe you needed to ask where the New Releases were or inquired about their Pull List policy once you had made your way inside the door. Or maybe you just wandered around until you found what you were looking for. Either way, chances are you were also experiencing excitement at the possibilities this new store held. The shop you just entered could actually be carrying all those back issues you have been searching high and low for or the person behind the counter may know every answer to every question you could ever come up with. The point being, that excitement can be felt again and again with very little effort (especially if you have a GPS). All you need is a free Saturday and the willingness to get in your car (or take the bus) and drive a bit…
Below is a short list of methods we’ll be going over to help you find some comic book buried treasure:

$3.99 Comics are Shrinking My Weekly Pile
Jan 21, 2009 Comics
I just took a quick look at the Marvel and DC solicitations for April of 2009 and the trend of $3.99 comics is certainly growing. This has been on the horizon for some time now as many one-shots and mini-series have been adopting the dollar increase, but now new series and some existing titles are bumping their prices as well. Unfortunately, all signs point to a near future with $3.99 being the norm and not the exception…
