Photo Journal #3: Balloon Incredible HULK!

hulk-balloon-headerI’m back with another superhero balloon!  After creating a relatively basic Spider-Man in the last Photo Journal entry, YouTube has now helped me to immortalize the Incredible Hulk in green and purple rubber.  This one was a pretty intricate and took a while to complete, but the results were worth it.  Thanks to the Happy Cabbie for the tutorial video.

Please continue on to see the Incredible Hulk balloon I created from start to finish. I will also link to the instructional video I used to create him.

Photo Journal #2: Balloon Spider-Man!

spidey-011This afternoon I stepped over a line into super-geek territory…  I found myself combining my fondness for comic books with a recently remembered hobby.   Most everyone have seen those balloon-animal dogs at the circus or during a street festival at some point in their lives and I recall always wanting to learn how to make them.  So, many years ago I bought some balloons and a “how-to” book and taught myself the basics of making balloon animals (I could make a dog)…  Fast forward to this afternoon and thanks to YouTube, I have discovered that there are many talented people out there making much more than just balloon canines.  If you search hard enough, you can find balloon versions of Batman, Mr. Fantastic, Iron Man and of course, Spider-Man.

You know I had to try making one…

Please continue on to see the Spider-Man balloon I created from start to finish.  I will also link to the instructional video I used to create him.

Hulk Vs. Animated Movie - Will It Be a “Smash”? Part 1 - Hulk vs. Wolverine

Hulk Vs.I’ve never been a huge fan of the animation that Marvel has been releasing over the past few years.  This doesn’t mean that the direct to DVD offerings are not well done or don’t have an audience (Marvel keeps producing them, so someone must be a market for them).  It just means that they have never really appealed to me.

I remember watching the Ultimate Avengers animated feature based on the Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch run on Ultimates and liking it well enough after loving the comic the film was based on.  But, I have not watched any of the releases since then including the 2nd Ultimate Avengers movie, Doctor Strange or Next Avengers.  Again, no real reason why except for general lack or interest.

Fast forward to now and Newsarama is showcasing 2 sneak peaks of the Hulk Vs. animated movie that Lionsgate Home Entertainment will be distributing on January 27th.  There are essentially 2 short films on the DVD release.  Hulk vs. Wolverine and Hulk vs. Thor.

I will be tackling the Hulk vs. Wolverine movie today and will follow up with the Hulk vs. Thor movie in my next entry.  Please continue on to see if Hulk vs. Wolverine will “smash” or “crash”.

Hero Initiative Offers Memberships - Should You Sign Up?

hero-logoA couple of days ago, Newsarama posted a story regarding the HERO Inititative offering an annual Memberships to any interested parties.  If you chose to sign up, you were directed to a link where you could choose which level of Membership you felt comfortable with.  Each level has an increasing number of goodies (sketch cards, trade paperbacks, T-shirts, etc.) from the lowest tier (Bronze) at $25 to the highest tier (Excelsior) at $500 with a couple levels in between.  For a full run down of the levels of Membership, check out the Newsarama article or the Atomic Comics link that was provided in the article.  The Atomic Comics link actually has a cool Stan Lee video as well.  I’m thinking he didn’t have time to memorize his lines.  Stan Lee is the Greatest!

The question I want to address is whether you should sign up for this Membership (and at what level) or not.  It would seem like a no brainer to slap down some cash (in the digital sense of the term) and support this organization while getting a bit of cool stuff in the process.  Who doesn’t want an original sketch card?  Or a one of a kind, personalized Stan Lee piece to add to their collection?  I know I do.  But in these economic times, every decision to spend money that is not a necessity needs to be examined.  As comic fans remove books from their weekly pull list (myself included) when cover prices increase and jobs decrease, every dollar counts that much more.  Fans are watching their wallets closely, just like everyone else.

A Great Read #2: The Hulk 100 Project

Hulk 100 Project CoverI must start by saying The Hulk 100 Project that was released in December by the HERO Initiative isn’t so much a “Great Read” as the title of this entry suggests as it is a “Great Look”.  The 135 page book collects the 120 (because ”120 is the new 100″ according to the Afterword) unique covers that were created by industry heavy weights like Ed McGuinness, Frank Cho, BOTH Romitas (Jr. and Sr.), David Finch, Mike Deodato, Steve Dillon, J. Scott Campbell and MANY more.  Just like the Ultimate Spider-Man 100 Project that came before it, artists were asked to create a cover for a comic book that would then be auctioned off to benefit the HERO Initiative.  The money raised from this publication would benefit comic creators that paved the way for the creators of today, obviously a very worthy cause.  The comic chosen this year was The Hulk #1 by writer Jeph Loeb and artist Ed McGuinness.

Continue on for more Hulk Action.  I have  also included some samples of what can be found inside this book at the end of today’s entry.
