The Weekly Pile March 18, 2009: Dark Avengers #3, Ultimatum #3, Uncanny X-Men #507, Wolverine #71, X-Force #13

The Weekly Pile is 5 issues strong this time around which is a vast improvement over last week’s unfortunate haul (or non-haul).  After digesting this past Wednesday’s crop, I quickly realized that every issue I purchased was published by Marvel.  I believe this is a first for me as a DC or Image book will typically find its way into the mix.  But, Marvel appears to be the publisher of the week as they secured 100% of my comics budget after I bought the following issues:

Final X-Men Origins: Wolverine TV Spots Now Online - “Legends”

My guess from yesterday’s post was validated today when I watched the 3rd X-Men Origins: Wolverine extended TV Spot and got to see brand new footage of Logan’s supporting cast ripping, tearing and blowing up the screen. The title “Legends” is rather appropriate for the trailer as the number of all-star characters zipping on and off screen during the spot’s 61 second run time is staggering. We are able to view glimpses of the Blob, John Wraith, Deadpool, Silver Fox, Gambit and still more!

Watch the trailer below to play “Spot the Mutant”

2nd of 3 New X-Men Origins: Wolverine TV Spots Now Online - “Brothers”

Yup, I’m that much more excited for Wolverine: Origins thanks to the second helping of “snikt” 20th Century FOX has released online in as many days!  The intriguingly named “Brothers” is an exciting follow up to the ”Outcasts“ TV spot yesterday, this time deciding to focus more on Logan the soldier as opposed to a child with puberty issues.  With only one more spot remaining to be released, I find myself curious as to what will be given the spotlight next.  My guess is that the multiple mutants set to appear in the movie will be front and center.  A third TV spot featuring more Deadpool and Gambit would meet with approval from this particular X-fan.

Have a peek for yourself below and see what you think:

New X-Men Origins: Wolverine “Outcasts” TV Spot = Kid Wolvie With Bone Claws!!!

519mjszteal_sl160_I legitimately do not care one bit what other people are saying about X-Men Origins: Wolverine.  The somewhat negative buzz surrounding this potential summer blockbuster completely astounds me.  Much of what I have seen up to this point has only added to my anticipation to see this movie on May 1st and viewing the first of a reported 3 new TV spots being shown on FOX TV over consecutive nights this week has only ramped that enthusiasm up even more!

Check it out for yourself below and see what I’m talking about:

Photo Journal #1: My Trade Paperback Collection

The HULK and I with my collection.
The HULK and I with my collection.

My trade paperbacks and hard covers survived the move with no casualties.  I offered up a few tricks and tips for moving a large collection in the last installment of Comic Book Buyer’s Guide as my own collection was getting ready to change locations.  That move happened yesterday (Thanks again for the help, Jer!) and all the TPBs were safely on their shelves by last evening after taking a ride in the U-Haul.  Once everything was removed from their (many!) boxes and back on the shelves, I thought it might be a cool idea to take a few pictures of the collection and post them here for you to see.

One thing to note is that I usually have a bunch of action figures and random stuff on the shelves as well, but those have not been unpacked yet.  You’ll only notice a couple of characters making appearances…  Quick note for those of you with sharp eyes and great musical taste; yes I am wearing a Tegan and Sara T-shirt in the photo above.  Check them out if you haven’t already.  Their latest record is named The Con and it is truly unstoppable.

So have a look at the images below and see what is included in my collection.  Maybe you’ll see a few books that are on your shelves or books included on mine that surprise you.  I don’t believe in the term “guilty pleasures” as no one should feel guilty for digging something even if others think it is lame or “too mainstream”.  My philosophy for buying comics has always been; “if you like it, pick it up” and that defines my purchasing approach perfectly.

Favourite 5 #1: The First 50 Covers of X-Men

61rd8xcmwnl_sl160_Comic Book Covers are supposed to entice and excite you. They should compel you to pick up the story they are representing or at least give you enough of a reason to open the comic up and flip through the pages. I woke up this morning and was thinking about what to write today as usual and as I was brushing my teeth, I started thinking about comics I read when I was younger. Almost immediately, the re-launch of the X-Men book in the early 90’s jumped into my head. What I remember most were the covers from the initial Jim Lee run and then into the Andy Kubert days. For whatever reason, these covers still stick with me today and I decided to run through my 5 favourites from the first 50 issues.

Check them out and let me know what you think. Are there any favourites of yours that didn’t make my list?

Twas the Night before Christmas and only Wolverine was Stirring

MERRY CHRISTMAS everyone!

Since today is Christmas Eve, I decided to try and put a different spin on “The Night Before Christmas” written by Clement Clarke Moore or Henry Livingston (depending on who you ask.  Wikipedia actually has an interesting write up regarding the Author Controversy HERE for anyone interested)

Continue on to see what Christmas Eve might be like for Marvel’s Merry Mutants.

Let’s Talk Artists #1: Leinil Francis Yu

51bqrow8mdl_sl160_I am a huge fan of comic book art!   There’s just something special about someone taking what they can see in their head and letting their pencil interpret that. The interpretation is the key. If you ask any professional comic book artist, or anyone at all really, to draw Spider-man and give them no other direction, they will hand you their specific vision of the character. That is what is so amazing! There are so many artists out there producing mind bending work that I want to spotlight them whenever I can.

Today I have chosen to focus on Leinil Francis Yu. Artist on such books as Superman: Birthright, Wolverine, X-Men, Ultimate Hulk vs. Wolverine, New Avengers and the recent smash, Secret Invasion.

What I have found myself doing over the years is developing an interest in a certain artist and then hitting the comic shops and online resources to find as much of their past and present creations as I can. As many comic fans know, artists rarely “pop” overnight so there are usually older gems that can be dug out of the quarter bins with a little effort. Not only that, but with the internet rising as it has been (it’s gonna stick around, kids. Tell your grandparents) you can find creations by your favourite artist(s) that you won’t find anywhere else by simply “treasure hunting” using a search engine as your map.  Google quite literally ”marks the spot”.  This is how you will find rare images of original commissions or comic con sketches that would normally have only been seen by the lucky recipient or anyone they happened to invite over for dinner.

Please continue on for more about Leinil and to see some videos of Leinil at work:
